Fancy Nancy

The joys of a little girl…all the fun girly things we can do together.  We recently “found” by way of suggestion from some friends the Fancy Nancy series of books by Jane O’Connor.  What a fun series of books!  My little girl loves all the ways Nancy is fancy, the fancy words she uses (which are great ways to advance her vocabulary too!) and I love that even though Nancy is fancy and girly, she still does lots of fun things, not just being “fancy” or pretty.

This first book introduces us to Nancy, and her love of being fancy.  Even though her family is not fancy, they have a fun night dressing up and going out to dinner.  What I love about this book is how involved and supportive her family is of who Nancy is as a person.

We started reading this one right before Valentine’s Day.  It was fun to talk about making Valentine’s for our friends and families.

I love how in this book Nancy and her friend Bree go out and explore their world around them, talking about being respectful of nature, but also helping to develop a curiosity of the world around.   While some of this book is geared to kids slightly older than mine, the general story is fun and we have been talking a lot about going exploring as the weather gets nicer outside.

I think this one of our favorites…Nancy has to miss her best friend’s birthday to attend her grandparents anniversary party.  Nancy is not happy about this, but her parents handle her with respect and kindness.

I really love how Nancy parents are patient and gentle with Nancy.  She stays up late looking at special scrapbook and instead of getting angry at Nancy, they use it as a time for her to see why a good nights sleep is important.

Nancy learns that you can have fun, even if you are not fancy as her new baby sitter turns out to be a, gasp!, a BOY!
